I can relate to this completely. As a child, my dad was a pastor in several churches in the south. I was in church every Sunday morning and night and Wednesday evenings. As I got older, it got harder and harder for me to believe in the words that he spoke because he was one person in the chucrh and another at home.
Until I visited Shoreline, I had lost faith in the meanings of his word due to my dad's behavoirs. I have been coming to Shoreline now, every week, for almost two months. Since then I have brought with me my mom and step father, who thought that I had joined a cult because I was speaking so highly about Shoreline and your laid back attitude, and my boyfriend, whom believes in Christ but doesn't believe in the traditional church structure. After these three people have come with me, they are now going and spreading the name of Shoreline's great approach to Jesus and talking about the new campus in Fort Walton. Thank you so much for giving me peace of mine that God does mean what he says and that even thou I have made mistakes I am still alright with him. I look forward to growing with Shoreline and with God from this point forward!!

What is amazing is the pastors and church leaders are in the business of communication: communicating the message of Christ. Yet 30 years of theological training actually hamper someone's ability to communicate all the theological knowledge they have attained, to someone who doesn't understand the basics. All one has to do is listen to anyone who is an expert in their field explain something to a lay person. So it is up to church leaders to explain abstract principals in concrete terms if they don't want to be frustrated and frustrate the listener.

Great analogy! The first time I encountered this scenario personally was about 12 years ago. I was driving with a co-worker and, five minutes into the car ride, she started asking some God questions. Each answer was followed immediately by another question, and I talked with her for nearly two hours. As my responses to her questions came almost effortlessly, I remember being surprised at how much I didn’t realize that I knew. I had absorbed a lifetime of church culture and Biblical teaching without consciously paying any attention to most of it. At the end of our conversation, she looked at me in awe and said, “Wow; you know SO MUCH about God! How do you just know all that without having to look it up?” I was shocked and said, without thinking, “You’ve got to be kidding. How can you not know anything about God or Jesus or church??” She stared blankly at me and said she’d never heard any of that before in her life. A 24-year-old girl from a regular American family had never heard one word about all the things that I spoke as a second language. She wasn’t interested in going to church and I remember wondering what to do with her if I couldn’t get her to go to services and start learning everything she needed to know. At that time, it never occurred to me that it was my responsibility to reach her where she was; it wasn’t her job to learn to speak “church.”
